In the near future, an international conflict rages over control of freshwater reserves in northern Canada. It is here that two young soldiers, Leïla and Leo, find themselves stationed together, tasked with guarding a well and its precious contents.

 

As they begin to open up and we learn more about their friendship and their past, tension builds in the air as the conflict takes shape around them. Their radiant youth and dreams counterbalance the weight of a troubled society, glimpsed through scattered references to heat waves in cities—where you can fry an egg on the pavement—empty swimming pools, racial violence and compulsory military service.

Two young adults from immigrant families who fled war choose to enlist in the armed forces. This is the path taken by the play’s characters, but also by the artists behind the project, Rasha Abdallah and Eric Vega, who later met at theatre school. Together, they chose to explore intimate, political and social questions with insight, humour and great tenderness.

 

Firmly rooted in our times, this play centres on the love and friendship between two seemingly very different characters who are ready to do whatever it takes to protect each other.
