YouCreate / YouShare
Forming a hub of artistic experimentation
April 13-27, 2021
The YouShare program will establish Youtheatre as a creative hub by offering the space as one of artistic research. YouShare will highlight the strength and diversity of Canada’s artistic voices, and uplift Montreal’s creative community. This will be an interdisciplinary space where established professionals and emerging artists can discuss exciting concepts, practice, meet new collaborators, play with technology, share knowledge and skills, and experiment with new ideas.
The program can accommodate book clubs, artist talks, panel discussions, brainstorm sessions and workshops such as:
Introduction to Digital Arts
Artists are introduced to the essential tools, software, and aesthetics of digital media arts, with a focus on performance. Introduction to video, sound, interactivity and installation. Discussion of alternative methods of show control and relationships between performance and design.
Dramaturgy Clinic / Project Workshop
Dedicated to understanding emerging dramaturgical practices related to new technologies and experimental/interdisciplinary practices. The artists will have time to explore a specific project they’ve been working on or begin to develop a new one.
Scenic Writing
Artists meet with professional writers to learn about their practices and develop new creation strategies. The participants explore various styles, techniques, and forms including non text-based creation.
Cultural Diversity & Bridging Communities
Discussions and meeting with leaders in the cultural community on best practices for inclusivity and diversity. Participants engage in critical discussion about the current state of diversity on the stage, and acquire resources. English and French artists learn about working with the “other” language, including union rules, auditions, agents, etc.
Video in Performance
Artists are introduced to the essential tools, software, and aesthetics of video, with focus on performance integration. Introduction to digital video, editing, generative video, projections, screens, interactivity, and mapping.
Guided Free Creation Time
Dedicated to understanding emerging dramaturgical practices related to new technologies and experimental/interdisciplinary practices. The artists will have time to explore a specific project they’ve been working on or begin to develop a new one.
The YouCreate program will welcome teen artists into Youtheatre’s space. By offering parallel courses in performance and digital arts, students will be equipped to become the world-shakers of tomorrow. The courses will be led by creators with dynamic practices who are committed to arts education. The two streams will have collaborative sessions, providing opportunity for professional development and cross-generational exchange.
A new community initiative in development
Performance
Participants will hone their dramatic acting techniques, including character development, text work, voice, improvisation, and more. Participants will also be introduced to alternative performance styles, such as multimedia performance or Post-Dramatic theatre.
Digital Media Arts
Participants will gain introductory skills and experience with interactive computer programming, video, and sound. Each week will introduce a new technology, teach practical skills, and allow time for application with creative projects. Participants will experiment with how these technologies can be applied in performative contexts.
Participants in both streams will benefit from a meeting with a guest artist which will include presentations, specialized workshops, and Q&A sessions. Both streams will discuss professional comportment in the arts as well as career management with information on auditions, unions, agents, grant applications, and more.
